International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN)

Written by Centre Delàs on . Posted in Campanyes

ICAN-roundWhy is it necessary?

After the Non-Nuclear proliferation Treaty ratification approved in 1968 and the end of the Cold war, the discussion about the nuclear armament lost influence and was set aside. However, the problem still exists. The existence of a number of some massive destruction arsenals in some countries means, not only the maintenance of some privileges but also a real problem for the human security.

The existence of these arsenals and the failure in the nuclear disarmament puts to all of us in a context what the danger is that other countries or organisations acquire these type of weapons has increased.

This is the reason why the only possible scenario that can guarantee the security of the civilization is the total abolishment of the nuclear weapons. Being the politic willingness the principal obstacle, the civil society must ask their politicians to implement measures and tools to the issue and a real end to this absurdity.

What is the campaign about?

Centre Delàs participates in the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) promoted by the International Peace Bureau. This campaign fights for the drafting of a treaty banning the use of nuclear weapons worldwide and it is ratified by the governments of different countries. The aim of the Centre Delàs is to give more impetus to an initiative that, through coordinated action of several institutions in the world, aims to completely eliminate nuclear weapons given the enormous danger to humanity.

The Centre Delàs also takes part in the IPB initiative (International Peace Bureau) which, considering that there are different views on the role and importance of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, propose as a preparation for the revision of the TNP in the 2015 Conference; a series of events in different cities. These actions are part of the consequences of the release of atomic bombs - Hiroshima and Nagasaki - which celebrated its 70th anniversary on August 15.

Tour hibakusha
The hibakusha Tour is an initiative carried out by Japanese anti-nuclear activists of the organization Gensuikyo during the autumn of 2015 with the aim to raise awareness and generate discussion about the future of nuclear energy and future prospects on the abolition of nuclear weapons. This tour consists of a set of events, debates and lectures on the above-mentioned situation with the support of victims of the atrocity of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the Fukushima disaster.

The Centre Delàs supports this initiative and will help, together with other entities, the realization of these events, and the organization of an event in Spain (Sant Cugat, Barcelona).
