CGOMS-roundWorld military spending reached almost $ 1.7 trillion in 2015, a 1% increase in real terms since 2014, according to new figures from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). In a context of dismantling the welfare state and continuing cuts in social policies, to allow the continued use of public money in the military sector? From the Delàs Center, and within the framework of the Global Campaign on Military Spending (GCOMS), we say no, we must reduce military spending!

For this reason, and together with other peace organizations and in collaboration with the International Peace Bureau (IPB), we have put into operation this global movement that calls for the reduction of military spending and investment in social spending.

Since 2011, and coinciding with the publication of the annual report of the International Institute for Peace Studies in Stockholm (SIPRI) on global military spending, the IPB organizes a Global Day of Action to bring public, media and political attention to The costs of military spending and the need to invest in new priorities that participate in building a culture of peace:

  • Peace: disarmament, conflict prevention and resolution and human security;
  • Sustainable development and the fight against poverty;
  • Environmental policies against climate change and the loss of biodiversity;
  • Social justice and well-being, human rights, gender equality and the creation of sustainable employment.
